I lived for 30 years close to the border with Hungary, so for me, it was way faster to go to Budapest, the capital of Hungary than to go to Bucharest, the capital of Romania.
Budapest has become the ideal city break, especially for Europeans, known for its nightlife, thermal spas, and historical façades. The food is delicious and attracts more and more tourists only because of this.

European Union: Hungary joined the EU on 1 May 2004.
Language: The official language in Hungary is Hungarian.
Currency: The currency of Hungary is the Hungarian forint (HUF).
Card Payments and Cash Withdrawals:
You can pay with international credit cards everywhere, starting from 1€. Some restaurants might impose a minimum payment of 10€. The country does not charge any fees for using the credit card.
ATM: they are easy to find everywhere in the country, you just look around you and you will find a Bank with an ATM.
Connexion: The Internet is at a very good speed, with 5G. Wi-Fi connection everywhere you go, free or on demand in some restaurants or hotels.
If you are from the EU, roaming is free of charge. You can call and connect to your mobile data as if you were in your country of origin without extra costs.
Railroads: You will have connections through the country and connecting other important cities in Europe, easily accessible. The Budapest Metro (in Hungarian: Budapesti metró) is the oldest electrified underground railway system in continental Europe and is only pre-dated by the London Underground. Budapest’s well-known Line 1 exists since 1896.
Plugs: Plugs are Type C and F. The standard voltage is 230V, and the standard frequency is 50Hz.
Best Time to visit
The most visited season in Hungary is SUMMER, from June to August. Nevertheless, the country can be visited all year round. Spring and Autumn will bring nice temperatures, which will allow you to wander easily the streets of Budapest.
However, winter is a bit chilly, being close to the Eastern part of Europe, so expect temperatures to go as low as possible. Because of this, many attractions, including accommodation in smaller towns, will be closed. Prepare in advance and do your research if you visit the country in the wintertime.
If you visit Hungary on a budget, wintertime is great as prices are low. Perfect for a road trip, as they have good roads.
