MUST-DO ACTIVITIES IN BALI: HIDDEN CANYON BEJI GUWANG
HIDDEN GEM: 100% ADVENTURE!
For me, Solo Travel equals adventure! When I am alone I decide which adventure I should pursue and which not, at my own pace. And I am a fan of hidden gems around the world. I think I like everything that is out of the ordinary, and travel makes no exceptions. Before going on a trip I always do my research in finding unusual places to visit, places that will not be on the bucket list of every tourist. And I always find some hidden gems that only locals know of. Sometimes I find these unusual activities online, sometimes by asking local people when I arrive there.
How To Get To The Hidden Canyon BEJI GUWANG IN BALI?
The Hidden Canyon is located on the South East part of the island. The Hidden Canyon Bali is located near the village Pura Dalem Guwang, named after the religious guardian of the area. I had a personal guide with me the entire day and we went first to the Tegenungan Waterfall and after to the Hidden Canyon. If you stay in Canggu, count 1-hour drive. If you stay in Ubud, count 30 minutes drive. There are road signs leading to Hidden Canyon Beji Guwang.
- Rent a scooter starting from 50 000 IDR (approx. 3.2 €/$) per day.
- Hire a Bali Private Car or Minibus Charter With Driver, very popular in Bali, starting from 400 000 IDR (25.6 €/$) per day (for 8 hours). It’s what I did and negotiated to 400K/day with my driver.
- Use the Go-Jek or Grab app to book a taxi. There is a standard base fare for Bali taxis of around 0.44 €/USD (7K IDR), and an additional charge per km of around 0.47 €/USD (7.5K IDR).
- Rent a bike and ride like Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love for total satisfaction.

Hidden Canyon BEJI GUWANG Entrance Fee
Entrance fees start at 120 000 IDR/person (8 €/$). I’ve been in August 2022.
You can get a discount per group.
Prices include an entrance fee, insurance in case something happens on the trail, a small water bottle, a personal guide which is mandatory to go to the canyon (for 1-4 people one guide), changing rooms with shower, a fresh face towel and a shower towel, a locker where to leave your belongings and 100% adrenaline. I left my belonging in the car with my personal driver, while he was waiting for me.
WHAT TO PACK
- A pair of flip-flops for the begging and the end of the trail. Once you descend to the canyon you will be barefoot only. If you don’t feel comfortable barefoot, make sure to have only a pair of kayak-friendly water shoes.
- A swimming suit as you will end up all wet, so don’t bother wearing clothes once you get to the canyon. I began the trail like in the above picture, but as soon as I reached the first canyon, I stayed in my swimming suit only
- A nice small dress in case you want to take some Instagram-worthy pictures. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
- Camera/Go PRO or just your phone for pictures. If your phone is not waterproof, make sure to take a waterproof phone pouch.
ABOUT THE HIDDEN CANYON BEJI GUWANG IN BALI
Beji Guwang is considered to be a sacred place for Balinese people. Local people consider the water flowing into the canyon as being holy and they use this water for their religious ceremony, Melukat. During the Melukat ritual, all the pilgrims bathe in the holy water to purify their souls.
The rocks surrounding the gorges have been there forever. The water from the river has deeply eroded the rocks throughout the years, carving the canyon path. This process of erosion created fascinating shapes and patterns, including skulls of tigers, and monkeys’ heads that can be seen as you cross the canyons.
Exploring the Canyon will take about 2 hours and you start with the hard canyon. The beginning of the first Canyon is indeed more challenging, with a lot of climbing and maintaining your balance, but the guide is there to help you at each step, so no worries. You can do this. Just be ready to get dirty. I did not edit the pictures, because I wanted you to see the real effect, the water is not as blue as you will see in some stock photos, and the reflection on the rocks is not visible either. Everything is quite dark, but it is impressive. It’s an activity that I suggest not missing when you go to Bali.
AN UNFORGETTABLE ADVENTURE
Once you arrive at the second canyon, the path is less demanding and the waters reach 2-3 meters, so you can bathe. It is totally safe, I did it. The water is quite refreshing but I love a good cold swim.
At the end of the second canyon, you will stumble upon a natural wild swing. We had such a good time here, with Rudi, the tour guide. I really felt like Jane, expecting her Tarzan.
After all the climbing, photo shooting sessions, and playing with the swing, at the end of the canyon trek you have a nice local that has put up together a nice authentic terrace where you can enjoy a good coconut. If you don’t have cash with you, there is no problem, because you will give it to your guide when you are back in the locker room.
I was bursting with Adrenaline at the end of the trail. I spent 3 hours because I took my time, but the adventure was unforgettable.

Safety issues can be daunting when traveling alone, especially as a solo female. Here you can find some useful tips to make you feel more at ease in Bali:
- Don’t hold your phone in your hand while on a scooter
- Keep your personal belongings safe at close to you at all times
- Get basic information on the most common Bali disaster drills, like what to do in an earthquake or volcanic eruption.
- Don’t swim while the red flags are up! The tides and currents in Bali can be really strong.
